Sprint Health & Capacity Tracker Documentation

Monitor your Agile team's pulse with an intuitive battery-style visualization. Track real-time progress, pacing, and scope creep on any Jira Dashboard — in single-board or multi-board comparison mode.

Getting Started

Follow these simple steps to add the gadget to your dashboard:

  1. 1 Open any Jira Dashboard and click Add Gadget.
  2. 2 Search for "Sprint Health & Capacity Tracker" and click Add.
  3. 3 On the gadget, click Configure to open the settings panel.
  4. 4 Choose a Layout: Single for one board, or Comparison to monitor up to 4 boards side by side.
  5. 5 Select your Board and configure any additional options to start monitoring.

The Battery Visualization

The core of the gadget is a multi-segment battery that represents your sprint's capacity and status:

  • Solid Colors: Represent work that was in the sprint at the start.
  • Patterned/Stripe Segments: Represent Scope Creep (issues added after the sprint started).
  • Empty Slots: Represent remaining capacity or work yet to be started.

Pro Tip: Click on any segment of the battery to see the exact list of issues in a detailed Forge modal.

Pacing & Health Line

The Pace Line is a real-time indicator of where completion should be based on elapsed sprint time. The Goal Line marks your target completion threshold.

  • On Track: When "Done" work reaches or exceeds the pace line, the battery shows green health.
  • Behind Schedule: Falling significantly behind the pace line triggers yellow or red warnings.
  • Goal Line: A horizontal marker at your configured completion target (default 80%). The battery turns green when you cross it. You can set this per-battery or globally.
  • Closed Sprints: The pace line disappears for closed sprints, showing only the final completion state.

Scope Creep Tracking

Transparently monitor how much work was added after the sprint began. The gadget automatically identifies "Creep" by comparing issue creation/addition dates with the sprint start date.

Creep is displayed using a distinct diagonal stripe pattern, allowing you to see at a glance if your sprint is becoming overloaded.

Team & Work Breakdown

Enable "Breakdown Batteries" in the configuration to see your sprint health divided by specific dimensions:

  • Assignee: See how work is distributed across team members.
  • Issue Type: Monitor the balance between Stories, Bugs, and Tasks.
  • Priority: Ensure high-priority work is being completed first.
  • Epic: Track progress toward your larger strategic goals.

Comparison Mode

Comparison Mode lets you monitor up to 4 boards simultaneously in a single gadget — perfect for team leads, programme managers, or anyone tracking multiple squads at once.

Setting Up Comparison Mode

  1. 1 Open the gadget settings and switch the Layout to Comparison.
  2. 2 Click Configure on any of the 4 battery slots to assign a board.
  3. 3 Optionally set a Sprint Offset and Goal Line per slot.

Sprint Offset

Each slot has an independent sprint offset so you can compare different points in time across teams:

  • Current sprint — always shows the active sprint (default).
  • Previous sprint — shows the sprint that just ended.
  • 2–5 sprints ago — for retrospective comparisons.

Offsets are resolved dynamically at load time — as sprints roll over, each battery automatically advances to the correct sprint without any reconfiguration.

Per-Slot Goal Line

Each comparison slot can have its own Goal Line threshold, independent of the global setting. This is useful when different teams have different completion targets.

Display Options

The Appearance tab in the settings panel lets you control how the battery is rendered:

  • Orientation: Switch between Vertical (tall battery, default) and Horizontal (wide battery) to fit your dashboard layout.
  • Show Goal Line: Toggle the goal line marker on or off. On by default.
  • Show Pace Line: Toggle the real-time pacing indicator on or off. On by default. Disabling it is useful when reviewing a closed sprint's final state without the distraction of the pace marker.

FAQ

How is health calculated?

Health is calculated by comparing your current completion ratio against the ideal pacing ratio (linear completion over the sprint duration). The Goal Line sets the threshold at which the battery turns green.

Does it support Story Points?

Yes. You can choose between "Issue Count" or any numeric field (like Story Points) in the gadget configuration. In Comparison Mode, each slot can use a different metric.

What happens to closed sprints?

For closed sprints, the pace line disappears and the gadget shows the final completion state. In Comparison Mode you can use sprint offsets to review past sprints from any slot.

How many boards can I compare?

Up to 4 boards at once in Comparison Mode. Each slot is independently configured with its own board, metric, sprint offset, and goal line.

Do comparison batteries update automatically?

Yes. Sprint offsets are resolved at load time against the live sprint list. When a new sprint becomes active, all batteries automatically track the correct sprint on the next page load — no reconfiguration needed.
